About

New Producers Academy exists because the audiovisual industry has an access problem, and it starts with who gets to produce. Since 2021, NPA has supported 17 producers across four programmes, helping them develop the projects, networks, and skills to shape the stories that get made. We were founded by Filmmaker and Producer Claudio Montesano Casillas, Filmmaker and Producer Loretta van der Horst, and Creative Producer Yassin Karmoudi, three people who experienced that gap first-hand and built NPA to close it.

Loretta van der Horst
Founder and Head of Programs

Loretta van der Horst is Dutch-Puerto Rican producer-director. Her most recent films took place on the US-Mexico border, in Honduras and in the Netherlands after Black Lives Matter. Her debut Behind the Blood (IDFA, 2019) won Best International Documentary at the HUMAN Film Festival in Oslo. The Border Crossed Us (IDFA, 2023) earned three Golden Calf nominations (Dutch Academy Award). Before that, she worked across Latin America as a journalist and producer, building a practice rooted in finding stories when and where nobody else was looking, resulting in multiple Emmy nominations for productions set in New York (PBS POV) and across Mexico (Discovery Channel). She is currently directing The Documenters (VPRO), following online researchers who archive evidence of war crimes as they navigate the collision between evidence and geopolitical interest. At her production house The Waves, she produces author-driven fiction and documentary by other filmmakers. She founded NPA after connecting with Claudio in 2020 through the Brown Girls Doc Mafia network. At NPA she oversees strategy and programmes. Loretta is a member of Global Impact Producers Alliance, Brown Girls Doc Mafia, an alumna of IDFAcademy, IFFR Rotterdamlab, and Docsociety Impact Lab.
